In December 2011 I sent a group of domain names to auction in a bid to sell them. The auctions started on December 1st, and ran for 7 days until the 8th. They were in a Sedo GreatDomains auction. Each domain had a reserve price to in sure a minimum value was reached.

The end result was 2 of the 3 names selling, both at fair prices. A pleasing if not perfect result, but that is the nature of the beast!

The reason I decided to sell them? I was downsizing my business during Q4 of 2011, part of which involved selling off assets. I’m pleased I went this route.

If you are here looking to buy domain names, I’m no longer your man. I do recommend you check out the GreatDomains auctions (link above) as they do have some cracking names in them.

Would I recommend selling via the Sedo auctions? The short answer is yes. You do lose 15% of the final value on Sedo fees (correct at time of writing) so you have to weigh up how much you think you will get selling via another route. But this is a good way to expose the name to lots of potential buyers, and being over in 7 days means a quick sale is possible if that is on your agenda, as it was with me. Of course if you do get your name into the GreatDomain auctions (they only accept decent domains) it is also worth doing a bit of your own work firing out emails to potential buyers or posting on forums to drum up further potential bidders.
